Aioi Nissay Dowa develops an AI detection system for predatory claims following natural disasters

Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, an MS&AD Insurance Group company, has developed a system to protect customers from criminal groups that charge them exorbitant fees in exchange for making home insurance claims following natural disasters. This system uses AI to detect such cases and intervene at an early stage to ensure the best outcomes for our customers.

Background:

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of criminal groups taking advantage of large-scale natural disasters to charge predatorily high fees for making insurance claims on behalf of those effected. In April 2022, we established the Home Insurance Support Centre, which specialises in handling cases where there is a high likelihood of such groups’ involvement, in order to protect our customers.

Though the insurance industry as a whole is taking action, such as preparing leaflets and other materials calling for attention, these criminal groups are becoming more sophisticated. In response, we have developed an AI system in collaboration with Mind Foundry, an AI startup from the University of Oxford, and Aioi R&D Lab – Oxford, our joint research institute, to detect cases in which there is a high likelihood that predatory criminal groups are involved, and thereby protect our policy holders.

Overview:

A function is provided to score and display the likelihood of the involvement of predatory criminal groups, as well as the basis for the calculation of the score, to ensure the transparency of the AI decision.
