Autonomous Driving

Promoting the wide-scale adoption of autonomous driving

Mobility wide

Overview

  • In 2022, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance formed a strategic alliance with Oxa, a UK-based autonomous vehicle software developer that enables organisations to deploy self-driving vehicle technology sooner for safer, more efficient operations. This move enhanced our global leadership in telematics insurance and data science capabilities, especially with the establishment of AIOI R&D LAB-OXFORD. The collaboration aims to create insurance solutions tailored for autonomous vehicles, promoting safer and more sustainable driving practices. Current R&D efforts focus on assessing risks associated with autonomous driving environments and software, with the objective of launching dedicated autonomous driving insurance by 2025 to accelerate the adoption of autonomous driving technologies.

Detail

Background

  • In 2022, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance formed a capital and business alliance with OXA, an Oxford University spin-out that develops autonomous driving software.

  • Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance acquired Insure The Box, a leading telematics insurance company in the UK, in 2015. Since then, it has been a pioneer in telematics insurance, spreading this expertise globally. In November 2022, AIOI R&D LAB-OXFORD was established to fundamentally enhance data science capabilities.

  • OXA aims for Universal Autonomy, developing software that enables autonomous driving in all regions and industries.

Hypothesis

  • Insurance is essential for vehicles to operate. For insurance pay-outs in the event of an accident, driving in accordance with insurance policies is required. Therefore, by appropriately designing insurance for autonomous vehicles, insurance companies can promote the adoption of safer, more secure, and eco-friendly autonomous driving.

  • Combining OXA's expertise in autonomous driving, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance's telematics insurance knowledge, and the technology of Aioi R&D Lab-Oxford and its R&D partners, it is possible to develop groundbreaking autonomous driving insurance that can be used in all regions and industries.

R&D

  • Research and development have commenced for the calculation of risks associated with driving environments and autonomous driving software in developing autonomous driving insurance.

  • Additionally, insurance for autonomous driving experiments, including those by OXA, is being provided, and relevant expertise is being accumulated.

Next step

  • The project will seek partners with the aim of developing dedicated insurance by 2025 to promote the proliferation of autonomous driving.
